Dealing with uncertainty

Just when we thought 2022 would be easier, we’re suddenly facing new global challenges. Do you feel your solid and steady foundations shaking once again? How do you stay mindful and empathetic to what’s going on and keep your anxiety under control and your projects on track?

How can you help?

A number of charities are working with Ukrainian people to provide food, shelter, medicine etc. Save the Children, UNHCR, British Red Cross - all of these are accepting donations via their websites. It doesn’t have to be a financial contribution. Many individuals are organising donations of clothing and other physical goods. Take a look at Facebook community groups to find your nearest one.

How can you reduce anxiety?

In times gone by, we had set points in our day to receive news via papers, radio or TV. Now we have news streamed to our phones 24/7. What we learnt from the pandemic was that there wasn’t more news, but we kept looking constantly (FOMO). You’ll probably have noticed the way that news apps and websites edit their content so that it looks fresh (new headline etc.) and entices you to click. All this keeps our anxiety levels high. Limit news updates to 2 or 3 times a day to stay informed but not constantly on alert.

You’ve worked out what you might like to do to help and you’re taking control of your anxiety levels. How can you refocus on what you need to do to further your career?

How can you stay focused on your career project?

  • Revisit your goals and check that they are SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timely) and meaningful to you. SMART is really important but goals that aren’t inspiring become tasks. You don’t need more tasks!

  • Dial it down - Take a break. Take 7 days when you don’t look for jobs. Come back refreshed next week.

  • Dial it up - Laser focus on one major obstacle for a week. May be that’s getting clear, sorting out your CV or LinkedIn profile. Just one thing.
